Crafting a green world in glass- Terrarium Class

HURRY on over to Ruth's Table in San Francisco for our first open vessel terrarium class this
Saturday the 28th of April. I will be assisted in the workshop by owners of
the Succulent Sisters. In the tradition of Ruth's Table we will be repurposing glass found at thrift stores and rummage sales and adorning our miniature green worlds with succulents and an assortment of wood, glass or shells if desiredl

Go to Ruth's Table website and click on programs. The workshop is $20.00 for adults and $7.00 for children accompanied by an adult.

Check out all the succulents at Claude Geffray's green house in Chico, Ca. I had such
a hard time choosing the succulents for the class!

Here are some of the succulents that I chose for the terrarium class.

top becomes a skirt

My daughter helped plan a 17th birthday party for a friend. It was a
"Gold" theme birthday. The girls were supposed to have as many
gold things at the party including their clothes. We headed to Thrifttown
in the Mission District and were lucky they were having a half of sale on
all clothing. We had a very limited time in the store.  My daughter found
a gold and red reversible jacket and a womans XL knit top black with
flecks of gold in it. See below how in I turned a XL top into a mini
skirt for the party.

Here is the XL top after I cut off the top of it. I didn't get a photo of it before I cut it but you get
the idea. The bottom is going to be the skirt. I added and elastic waist band to it.

Check out the original price tag on this top! Yes- $99.00! I didn't discover
the cost of the top until we got home and saw the tag. We paid $1.99 and tax!

Here is the skirt! On the way to the party. I also made the gold
halter top Elana is wearing but didn't have time to take photos of
the process. We were in a huge hurry. Estimated time to shop and make
the top and skirt and buy gold food and make gold present: three hours!

Quick banner card

Take one piece of old mail (an annual report with good colors) and a
pair of scissors or in this case my new Fiskar punch and make quick
mini banner card.

I ordered this banner/pendant large squeeze punch from Jo Ann's Fabric online for 40% off.
I could have used a scissor to cut the little pendant flags but this was super fast and I
didn't have to think beyond looking at the color of paper.

I used a tiny piece of twill tape and some Uhu glue stick and glued to a piece of card stock. You
could use a piece of twine or just a piece of thin paper string your little flags.

I got about 100 mini pendants pieces out of a few pages or this old annual report.  That is
enough for a lot of cards! I think I will use them for thank you notes.

Find of the Week #5

A huge plastic bag with a ball of zipper tape was
my find of the week! It is a great burnt orange
color. See my "This into That" post for what I did with the ball
of zipper! A find at SCRAP.

"This into That"

This is a new feature to this blog called "This into That".
It also happens to be made with my find of the week. The "this"
is a big ball of zipper and the "that" is the zipper brooch
I cut 13 pieces of zipper and used a high temperature glue
gun and made the "petals". I trimmed the zipper tape and
made a swirl for the center of the brooch.

Big ball of zipper tape =  zipper brooch
This into that

This brooch is quite large measuring in at 5 inches in diameter. I love it this big even if it is a
bit floppy. The zipper was not stiff but nice and soft. I plan to make a lot more brooches!

Bird house and Bottle cap necklace workshop

This Saturday on February 25th I am giving a Birdhouse necklace, glass
tile pendants and bottle cap necklace workshop at Ruth's Table.
My friend Dorothy Yuki asked her wood working brother Michael to cut
bird houses for the workshop. They came out great! I have
been collecting bottle caps from restaurants we frequent. People look at
you a little funny when you ask but if you hurry up and say that
the bottle caps are for art everyone is happy to help out.

Here at the tiny bird house necklaces decorated with a vintage air mali envelope. Also included
is a bottle cap necklace with a vintage dictionary page and a glass tile with a topographic map.
Join us this Saturday if you want to make some fun necklaces. We will
use postage stamps, old book pages and other paper to decorate the birdhouse and the bottlecaps. Join us and sign up on Ruth's Table web page. Adults and children welcome.
It will be a lot of fun!
